What is the Alpine Ski Technical Test
The Technical Ski Test is the first step of the ski instructor training in France. This is a timed test of alpine skiing that validates the level of skiing of a person wishing to become a ski instructor. The Technical Test is a special ski slalom with a qualifying time.
The candidate who wants to become a ski instructor must achieve a maximum time to pass the Technical Test. The qualifying time for the Technical Test is calculated in relation to the opener’s time as follows:
- For male candidates in the Technical Test: The time in the timed slalom must be less than the time achieved by the opener + 20%;
- For female candidates in the Technical Test: The time in the timed slalom must be less than the time achieved by the opener + 25%.
Once the candidate has passed the Technical Test, he or she can begin the training program to become a ski instructor at the National Ski and Mountaineering School.
How do I register for the Technical Ski Test?
Registration for the Alpine Skiing Technical Test is done in several steps. To register you must create an account on the GEPAFO platform of the French Ministry of Sports. We detail the procedure in detail.
When can I take the Alpine Skiing Technical Test in 2024?
Each year 2 sessions of Technical Tests are organized in France:
- The first Test session takes place in December and January;
- The second session of tests takes place in March and April.

The 1st session of the Ski Alpin 2024 Technical Test runs from December 21, 2023 to February 9, 2024. Registration runs from October 23 to November 8, 2023.
Who can take the Technical Test?
The Technical Test is open to anyone over the age of 17. Each candidate may only register once for each session. Therefore, the candidate can only attempt the Technical Test twice a year.
What is the price of the Technical Test?
The price of the Technical Test registration is 80€. This price includes only the registration to the timed slalom. All transportation and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the candidate. The registration fee is not refunded if the candidate fails the Technical Test.
