How does the sandwich course work?

Work-study training for the Diplôme d’État Moniteur National de Ski Alpin alternates between periods of theoretical and practical instruction at ENSA Chamonix and periods of teaching in a ski school, such as ESF Les Menuires. Students work as employees or trainees in a partner structure, enabling them to immediately put into practice the skills acquired during the training units (UF). The work-study approach is progressive: initially focused on perfecting technique and basic pedagogy, it evolves towards total autonomy in supervising groups of all levels.

How long does the course last?

The duration varies according to the candidate’s background and starting level. On average, it takes between 4 and 7 years to obtain the full diploma, with a statutory maximum of 10 years. Some high-level athletes or holders of related diplomas (BEES, DE in other disciplines) can benefit from shorter periods. Work-study programs often accelerate professionalization, as they combine academic training with paid field experience.

When does the training take place?

Training is spread over several winter seasons, generally from December to April, during which the future instructor works in a partner ESF, such as the ESF Les Menuires. The training units organized by ENSA take place in sessions scheduled throughout the year, often in the off-season (spring and autumn), to enable trainees to work in the field during the winter. This rhythm enables complete immersion in the professional life of a ski instructor, while validating the regulatory stages of the diploma.
